West Virginia American Water Responding to Isolated Operational Impacts of Widespread Flooding

Dateline City:
CHARLESTON, W.Va.

No system-wide impacts; Water service restoration for Clendenin area expected to take multiple days due to inaccessibility and continued high water

West Virginia American Water continues to respond to isolated operational impacts from severe flooding across its service areas. The company is not experiencing any system-wide operational impacts at this time, and all water treatment facilities remain fully operational.

Power has been restored to the company’s main office on Pennsylvania Avenue in Charleston, but phone and IT networks have not yet been fully restored to this facility or the Kanawha Valley Water Treatment Plant. The access road to the New River Water Treatment Plant has been temporarily repaired, and only a few booster stations remain running on generator power in Kanawha and Fayette counties.

Kanawha County Update: Approximately 3,000 customers are experiencing water outages in areas around Clendenin and Elkview due to widespread flooding, which has washed out several water mains and damaged a number of pump stations. Crews are working to access the impacted areas to assess the damage as floodwaters recede. To begin restoration of water service to Clendenin, crews must activate the Elk River Road booster station, which remains under several feet of water. Crews hope to gain access and restart the booster station overnight if conditions allow. Operations personnel have secured temporary pumps and temporary water lines to carry out a restoration plan in the area as roads become accessible. A water tanker will be stationed along Frame Road across from the Department of Highways garage. Customers should bring their own containers to fill.

Fayette County Update: Approximately 200 customers are experiencing a water outage in the communities of Lookout, Spyrock, Winona and Edmond. Two booster stations have been restarted on generator power, and operations personnel hope to begin pressurizing the area overnight. Crews will be working to locate a suspected river crossing failure as water service is restored and will initiate repairs once the area is accessible. A water tanker is en route to the church parking lot in Winona. Customers should bring their own containers to fill.

Boone County Update: Approximately 50 customers along Joes Creek are experiencing a water outage due to a creek crossing water main being washed out by flood waters. Crews are working to install a temporary line, and service should be restored by later this evening.

All customer service questions should be directed to the company’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-685-8660. Emergency alerts will be communicated through the company’s CodeRED emergency notification system and posted online at www.westvirginiaamwater.com under “Alert Notifications” and via social media.

West Virginia American crews will continue working around the clock to respond to operational impacts over the weekend, but the company anticipates much longer than usual restoration times due to many areas being completely inaccessible. The company will continue to coordinate with emergency responders and road crews to access and repair damaged facilities as quickly and safely as conditions will allow.
