$1.5 million in Additional Infrastructure Upgrades Announced in Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. (September 27, 2020) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced an additional $1.5 million in waterline replacement projects in the City of Scranton to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions, and increase water flows for firefighting.  The system improvements replace water main dating as far back as the 1890s.

In April, the company announced an $8 million project to install nearly seven miles of pipe in the city along 34 streets.  The new projects, which start this week, add an additional 6,800 feet of new eight-inch pipe along 10 streets, including:

  • Acker Avenue
  • Cedar Avenue
  • 12th Avenue
  • Rock Street
  • Schnell Place
  • Blickens Court
  • West Lackawanna Avenue
  • 6th Street
  • North 8th Avenue
  • Wright Court

Crews will work weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.  Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction.  The company expects to complete the water main installation, including transfer of all customer services by the end of the year, with final restoration and paving set for Spring 2021.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower than normal water pressure.  Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences.

Pennsylvania American Water employees and contractors will exercise caution and follow CDC guidance for social distancing and hygiene while performing this work. For our customers’ safety and the safety of our employees, we ask that members of the public do not approach our employees or contractors.  For more information, contact Pennsylvania American Water’s customer service center at 1-800-565-7292.
